Alaska!

Day 4 of Ionia, day 5 of Alaska life.

After a semi-roughish start, I have become so comfortable here. It was a hard adjustment…both physically and mentally. It is a hard lifestyle to adjust to, and the macrobiotic diet makes people sick at first so I had some serious nausea mixed with homesickness but now that I got past that hump, I absolutely love it here. This community knows what they are doing. I will explain in person what their philosophies and lifestyle are like, but the way they live shapes some very amazing people who I have already learned so much from even in this short time. And the kids are SO GREAT. I have made best friends in 2 ten year old girls and a 15 year old boy who are all more mature than most people I meet at school (although that often is not saying much). And I have become mother to the most precious 3 year old girl on the planet, Juliet.  I have also made grown up friends, I promise. I thought everyone here would be so different from people at home, but they are so normal, just with a greater outlook on life and how to live it.

So I’m gonna go through a day in the life of Ionia. This morning, Sarah and I ran to the beach, which faces a “Ring of Fire” of volcanoes in the distance……breathtaking. And the beach has all these igneous rocks that I’ve only ever seen in class which is exciting. We help a lot with lunch and dinner and clean up…lots of vegetable chopping to great music. After cleanup, we chill. Yesterday we played scrabble, today we played cards and read and laughed a lot.  Everyone here plays music, so someone is always playing guitar and singing and they have the same taste in music as us which is awesome. We have done a lot of work in the garden, weeding and picking vegetables for meals. After helping cook, eat, and clean up dinner (and usually dessert MMM) we chill more, play lots of volleyball, watch movies (they have a trillion), dance around and hang out.

Tomorrow is their monthly Full Moon party and we are having tempeh sandwiches with FRENCH FRIES and onion rings alksjdfajnsdg. They folk dance all night long (although it never feels like night here because it’s aaalways light outisde). It sounds like a blast. Unfortunately, some awesome and hilarious people are leaving on Sunday, which is a bummer but more people are coming next week, and we are planning some trips around Alaska for the near future. And we are seeing Harry Potter on Sunday which I can not wait for.

If you want to look them up, go to Ionia.org although it doesn’t perfectly capture how incredible this place really is. Will update soon!

Eat Your Greens - TIME

veganskinnybitch:

I love the opening to this article, talking about how eating meat is basically one of the worst things you can do for the environment. It’s true - if you REALLY want to go green, read this article and DON’T contribute to the meat industry!

“If you can’t buy a Prius, you can certainly eat like one.” Dig it!

I like this article, except it says that eating lean meats like chicken don’t have a negative environmental impact, when chicken farms are the #1 pollutant to the Chesapeake Bay.

Ughhh

So I bought this really great watch on sale at Target for 9 bucks a few months ago. It’s bright orange, super cute, great for running and part of my work uniform. Then a few days ago, it disappeared after work. This was a travesty. I tore my car apart, which is quite a feat considering I still have half of my dorm room in it along with quite a bit of trash and random crafts that 5 year olds have made me (I have a problem).  I had reluctantly concluded that it was gone forever. But then…..last night I was driving home and heard its alarm going off. Muffled, but definitely there. I couldn’t search for it because I was driving and that would likely be dangerous, but I’m pretty sure it is somewhere underneath the shit on the right side of the car. Could be passenger seat, could be backseat. But you never really know with these things. I’ll keep you updated.
